This coming weekend the newest Peace Corps Nicaragua group swears in, and they officially transition from being Peace Corps Trainees to Peace Corps Volunteers. Although they’ve learned a staggering amount since I was with them during orientation, I can guarantee that they’ll find ample opportunities to apply this dicho:
Andar como perro en procesión – To walk like a dog in a parade.
Two things you should know about Nicaragua: there are a lot of stray dogs, and there are a lot of processions. Funerals, patron saint celebrations, school desfiles, Independence Day, the Anniversary of the Literacy Crusade…you name it, there’s a march for it. With all the action on the streets, it’s inevitable that you’ll witness a few street dogs ambling aimlessly amongst the participants. Therefore, if someone says Yo ando como perro en procesión, they are saying they’ve got no idea what’s going on.
So get in line, Nica 66, and welcome to the parade 🙂
